How to Package a 1-Hour Consulting Call
A "consulting call" is hard to sell, because nobody knows what they are buying. An hour of your time only becomes sellable once it has a name, a shape, and a price attached before anyone books it.
Give it a name and a promise
"Consulting call" describes the format, not the outcome. Replace it with a name that states what the client walks away with: not "Marketing Consulting" but "Positioning Review: find out why your pricing is costing you clients." The name does the selling before the call even starts.
Structure the hour
An unstructured hour drifts. A structured one feels like a service. A simple three-part shape works for almost any kind of expertise:
- First 10 minutes: context. What is actually going on, in their words.
- Middle 35 minutes: the work. Diagnosis, options, a recommendation.
- Last 15 minutes: what happens next. Concrete next steps, written down.
Decide what happens after, before you start
Sessions that end without a deliverable feel like they evaporated, even when they went well. A short written recap, a checklist, or a one-page summary sent afterward makes the hour feel complete and gives the client something to act on. Decide what that artifact is before you sell the session, not while you are writing the follow-up email.
Price it once, then stop negotiating
A published price for a defined session signals that you know what your time is worth. Negotiating the price per client does the opposite: it turns every booking into a small negotiation, and it means two clients getting the identical session at different prices, which rarely stays a secret.
Fair questions
Should I still offer a free version to get people in the door?
That is a valid strategy, but make it a deliberate, separate offer, like a short intro call with its own name and its own limits, not an unpaid version of the same session.
What if someone wants more than an hour?
Sell it as a separate, larger session with its own name and price, rather than open-endedly extending the original hour.
